A Revived New Orleans Market Champions the Local and Brightens Up the Neighborhood
Urban European-style food halls packed with grab-and-go artisanal goods and gourmet groceries from specialty purveyors and local vendors are quickly becoming commonplace across America. Today, New Orleans joins the trend with the reopening of St. Roch Market — in its original building, which was wrecked by Hurricane Katrina nearly a decade ago.
Thanks to a three-year, $3.7 million renovation, the refurbished building — a shining beacon among the fading, crumbling charm of the historic neighborhood — retains its original steel columns but now boasts bright, 30-foot ceilings and 100 places to sit along the now bright-white corridor.
